Safe Human Foods for Cats

While cats are obligate carnivores and need meat-based diets, there are some human foods that are safe and even beneficial as occasional treats.

Safe Foods (In Small Amounts)

Pumpkin: Plain, cooked pumpkin (not pie filling) aids digestion and can help with both constipation and diarrhea. 1-2 teaspoons is plenty.

Cooked carrots: Soft, cooked carrots are safe and provide fiber. Many cats enjoy the sweetness.

Berries: Small amounts of blueberries or strawberries are safe. Some cats enjoy them as treats.

AVOID These Common Foods (Toxic to Cats)

  • Onion and garlic: In any form—toxic to cats’ red blood cells
  • Chocolate: Contains theobromine, which is toxic
  • Grapes and raisins: Can cause kidney failure
  • Xylitol: Artificial sweetener found in many products—extremely toxic
  • Raw dough: Expands in the stomach

Important Note

Treats should never make up more than 10% of your cat’s daily calories. Always introduce new foods slowly and in tiny amounts.
